Sleep is the new medicine. We are finally researching and learning just how important quality sleep is to your longevity and health! Even one night without sleep creates a state that is similar to being legally intoxicated. DANGEROUS!! Studies now link insufficient sleep(<7hr) to adverse health outcome such as cardiovascular issues(high blood pressure), metabolic disease(diabetes), hormone imbalance, memory loss, slow cognition, immune suppression, and even your emotional balance. Check out this double whammy.. only getting 4-5 hours of sleep a night will decrease your leptin level which is your feel full cue AND it increases your hunger hormone. This explains the fatigue munchies☹ Several devices are on the market that can even track your quality of sleep.
How do you know if your sleep is quality? Start by asking yourself do I feel recharged and ready for the day? Next, are you in bed sleeping for 7-9 hours? If you answer no to either, you need more or better sleep. Stay tuned for my next blog on tips to get the best quality zzz’s.
