March is the perfect month to highlight something green! Is this “food miracle” a veggie or fruit? Well technically it is a fruit but most of us treat it as a veggie. No matter how you want to think of it, try to incorporate at least ½ of an avocado daily because it is so good for your health and heart.
Avocados are extremely rich in monounsaturated fats. These important guys decrease your LDL/bad cholesterol. Why is this important? Less bad cholesterol will decrease your risk of stroke and heart disease. They are also rich in potassium. This is important in keeping your blood pressure under control. Potassium is also important for bone health.
Avocados also contain lots of soluble fiber. Most Americans do not get enough fiber in their daily diet. Just ½ of an avocado has 20% of your daily requirement of fiber. AWESOME!
The benefits of fiber are immense for your gut health, anti-inflammatory properties, helping decrease the risk of colon cancer, and keep you full longer. Soluble fiber will bind to cholesterol and further decrease your risk for heart disease.
Lastly, they are rich in many antioxidants. These powerful guys will help decrease inflammation in your body. Remember, inflammation is most always the root of chronic disease!
How can you get your ½ avocado a day?? Try it in your morning smoothie, homemade guacamole, or make a creamy dressing like green goddess. Let’s get eating 😊
