In June we covered briefly how the GLP-1 weight loss meds worked and we went deep into many foods that work in a similar fashion WITHOUT any side effects. Just to quickly review we discussed proteins, fibers, fermented foods, healthy fats, acids, leafy greens, and green tea. We then closed with the amazing fact that all these foods also take care of your body and total health so you feel, look, and perform at your best!
Along with foods, there are some herbs that help with weight control. These herbs work by increasing your metabolism and help to control your appetite.
Fenugreek, cayenne pepper, ginger, oregano, and turmeric. This last one is so good for inflammation I recommend it for everyone!! Many of these herbs are so easy to incorporate into a salad, dressing, or simple recipes. I use almost all of these in my quick spicy Indian kidney beans.
Two special herbs that help control weight have the benefit of helping lower your blood sugar also. These are cinnamon and gymnema sylvestre. Gymnema is an herbal supplement. Always talk with your doctor before starting any supplements or herbs unless you are just consuming it as a food. Easy ways to use cinnamon are add it to your overnight oats, oatmeal, or chia pudding.
We can also include a couple other supplements. Berberine has many useful functions. It helps regulate energy metabolism, helps your cells respond to insulin better to keep your blood sugar lower, promotes good gut bacteria growth, may reduce fat accumulation, and possibly slow digestion to keep you feeling full. This is one I would discuss with your doctor before starting. It is not always absorbed well and could interfere with other medications.
Another supplement to consider is magnesium. Many of us think of this one in regards to sleep and muscle health. Did you know it is also important for regulating your glucose/blood sugar levels.
Now you have lots of tools other than medications to help maintain or reach a healthy weight for long term health.
